in honour of Cardi B's deliciously controversial new single WAP, I'd like to talk about sex in songs. How great is it? What camp are you in? Do you wanna whip it out in joy when you hear those dirty dirty words in those clever clever rhymes(me)? or do you recoil in horror from the increasingly explicit lyrics in the rap music the kids are making these days?
I especially love when Beyonce gets dirty - see Partition, yum. Or Nah is basically porn in a song. Nicky Minaj scandalised us all with Anaconda in 2014 but now it seems relatively tame.
It's easy to clutch our pearls along with every wave of "the kids" - no matter how much you thought you were bold and edgy, and looked back contemptuously on the stodginess of your parents' generation, eventually we all find ourselves looking aghast at the top of the pop charts. But explicit lyrics aren't really anything new. I wouldnt be a 90s kid if I didnt remember how I shivered listening to trent reznor say he wanted to fuck me like an animal... and here's a recording of Lucille Bogan back in 1935, singing about the nipples on her titties, as big as a thumb, and having a grand old time doing it too.
Explicit lyrics are all about confidence.. they're about not giving a shit, they're about being rauchy and horny and extravagant and rude, dirty and all-out, luxurious, problematic and sometimes disgusting. this description can also be applied to me when I'm at the height of my arousal. I almost like the way it makes me sweat sometimes - especially the stuff that's really just misogynistic - I search it out for that collision of morality, my politics and my erotic mind - the more wrong it is, the more it turns me on. It hits me right in those church porn feels. thanks Kanye.
So what about you guys? Do you like dirty words? Dirty songs? Or do you find it vile? Have you got favourites? or ones you love to hate (my neck my back is just annoying to me for some reason). Do tell...

I love dirty songs, and I love dirty song writers. From Rihanna to Christeene to Eazy E... but the first ever song that excited me back in the 90's with their sexy lyrics would have to be Red Light Special by TLC. I wasn't even sure about my own sexuality back then, but this song certainly moved me (quite literally) back then and still makes my bits feel funny today.

om omg omg!!! THANKYOU! red light special. I knew there was a TLC song that drove me wild but I couldn't remember... of course. god DAMN. all through the NIGHT.

That has to be the most unarousing video I have ever seen in my life.

showin my age, but ya gotta luv it;
The Blues genre is full of lyrical explicit metaphors, metonyms, innuendos, and double entendres with it's own sub-genre, "Hokum" music
My favorite music to fuck by has always been classic John Lee Hooker
Good Rockin Mama (both slow tempo & Fast tempo versions)
Wobblin Baby
Unfriendly Woman
Boogie Chillin

I've gotta say, while i'm not really into high heels and long nails and skimpy outfits as a 'turn on', seeing two black women unashamedly sing and dance about female sexuality is fucking awesome. Whether or not it's something I necessarily find sexy, I think it's absolutely amazing too see WAP make waves the way it is! I am a person who wants to see women dress how they like, speak how they like and act how they like. I want to see female sexuality discussed in a way that isn't taboo and I want to see black women's voices amplified. So for all of those reasons, I think WAP is amazing regardless of whether it fits my tastes in music.
I don't think I really listen to much music that is sexy/sexual at all, but I know I used to listen to a lot of it on the radio when I was younger (it feels like there was a big trend for super sexual hits in the early 2000s) and I do get nostalgic for those tacky hits. Dirrty by Christina Aguilera for example!! Banger
Maybe in 15 years WAP will be one of those nostalgic party anthems for my generation!

I think, if you're looking to "get aroused" by WAP, you're really missing the point - it's not about arousal - not about male arousal, at least. As Megan Thee Stallion oh so succintly sings, "In the food chain, I'm the one that eat ya".
WAP's about pushing boundaries. it's about art, it's about the extreme, it's about the grotesque meeting the beautiful pushing it down on a couch and coming all over its pretty little unoffensive tiny blinking face. rising up straight from beauty's ashes and picking its teeth with the bones. it's about not giving a fuck, it's about female domination, it's about power. it's an Amazon fantasy - towering women with towering clits and breasts and huge dripping pussies and huge asses, tits that can crush your pathetic little face. Even the colours are garish, the prints dont match, it's a nauseous exotic acid trip funhouse mirror. You can't help but see yourself in it, because it makes you feel something, whether you like it or not. I don't have enough of an art degree or knowledge to really get to the bottom of it all, but get Nio in here and she'd be able to school us about it.
I don't have a degree but I do know this much. WAP is not porn for men. it's commentary. it's designed to shock, not to arouse. It's meant to make you squirm and wring your hands and mock it awkwardly or criticise it scathingly online. Your clicks are money. So I guess it's doing its job.
Bob, I also LOVE fucking to the blues, with my favourite album to do so being "The History of Otis Redding". There's nothing like those slow moods trickling down out of the speakers, winding you up, those heart breaking breaks, the deliberate shiver picking of those notes. These arms of mine - OH. I'd rather go blind by Etta James... oh. I will ride all night to a slow deep jam.
Those John Lee Hooker songs are a bit more uptempo than I usually like for sex. I love Big Legs Tight Skirt for a sexy song though.
When it comes to the classic songs, I also get off on songs about inappropriately aged girls. That's just how I roll, fight me. Or just look uneasily askance at me, whatever. Chantilly Lace (not really explicitly young but bouncy hot and I love it), The Beatles "I saw her standing there" (she was just seventeen, and you know, what I mean), BB King Sweet Sixteen, etc. Just makes me shiver.
Offline
Beautifully said Piper_A! And I wholeheartedly agree. People really feeling their sexuality is hot as hell and while this song isn't really my jam musically, I'm deeply appreciative of its existence.
I love this quote I saw from a Dazed article regarding Russell Brand's opinion on the video for WAP -
"The male gaze was once always the direct or indirect focus of music videos, but female artists have since ripped up that rule book".
As for songs that I find really hot, in terms of voice, I have to say Wicked Game by Chris Isaac does it for me. Physically I'm not even remotely attracted to him, but ohhhhhhh man THAT VOICE. Also basically every song (and accompanying videos) by Lizzo and the entirety of the Dirty Computer Emotion picture by Janelle Monae. I sometimes have to stop watching it just so I can breathe properly because it's so hot and beautiful. "Make Me Feel" and "Pynk" in particular. Oof!
When I was a kid "Let's Talk About Sex" and "Whatta Man" by Salt N Pepa were two of the most scandalous songs lil' kid Red had ever heard. Some of my friends wouldn't even utter the "S" word, so to hear it so freely in a song was mind blowing at the time.

Also LOVE your most recent comment Viva, I would love to hear Nio's take on WAP! I think you articulate the way the video pushes boundaries incredibly well <3

Oh yes I get it! But it's a video and song explicitly about sex, and I wonder if anyone does find it arousing. Anyone?
Offline
I'm turned on by the line "make that pull out game weak" - I love the feeling in sex when you just know you could make him cum whether he wants to or not. that is so hot. there's plenty of sexy things in this video. Cardi B straddling the arm of a couch. That dance where they drop and twerk while pounding the floor with their fists like "papi harder!" such a good move, so evocative. I love watching the tiktoks of people doing it over and over.
If you're trying to make the point that "no one" would find it arousing, like, come on. These are conventionally hot women twerking in skimpy outfits. They may not be to your taste and the style and aesthetic may not be your thing but plenty of people who like having sex with women's bodies get turned on by big tits, strong long legs, big lips, assertive sexual gestures and sexual dancing. I would turn this question around and ask you seriously, do you think no one finds this arousing?
Offline
I actually think this is really interesting in context of our website. Whether it arouses is besides the point. The question is, is performative sexuality authentic? Like the idea of our website is to portray female sexuality as it is purely, without the male gaze. IE as it is non-performatively. We are seeking to strip back the centuries of indoctrination where we were told how to be sexy, and find what's really left when all that is gone.
But women are not islands, women are not powerless, women had and have and always will have something to say about how they want to look, act and be seen. I just don't buy this 100% subjugation victim story of the patriarchy. Yes women have been oppressed in many ways but we have also always held power - sexual emotional and social power - and we have wielded it and we have chosen. In fact 'what is sexual' has been a dance, a game of catch-and-throw, defined and subjugated and re-defined by men and women and queers and art and pain and history and a million other things.
For IFM, authenticity means that women are given a platform to express who they are and what they do when they're alone, but that's because IFM is fundamentally a website for voyeurs (love you guys!) and exhibitionists. Is my authentic sexuality truly private? If so, why am I here at IFM? The truth is, my sexuality is relational, just like so many people. When we are alone, we fantasise about not being alone. When I see the blinking light of the camera, I know someone is watching. That makes me feel extra sexual.
Sexuality is relational. Cardi B shoves her tits in your face and twerks to say shes in charge - and what are you going to do about it? I pull up my cozy socks, bend over in my white cotton panties and pretend I don't see you there, hiding just to the side of my open window curtains. Are these actions really so different? One acknowledges the male gaze and bounces on its dick. That's for the men who like to be acknowledged. The other is coquettish and plays cat-and-mouse. That's for the men who like to be unacknowledged. But neither is more or less authentic than the other. Both want you to pay attention to them.
The truth is that as a straight girl my sexuality doesn't exist without the male gaze - I want that gaze on me, I want to make men happy. I want to be wanted and to stoke that desire. Is that unfeminist? I don't really think so anymore. Love is feminist. The problem is not the male gaze, or wriggling for it, smiling for it playing with it or looming up in front of it. The problem is not lipstick, long legs high heels, big asses or tight ones, long nails or natural ones, legwarmers or short skirts.
The problem is oppression. Get rid of the oppression - the casual workplace rape and molestation, the monetisation of our bodies for advertising, the financial pressure of life in a society which forces us to dictate our choices by practical needs rather than intuition, sensual feeling and ethics, the inequality in positions of power, the immediate question when a woman makes art (or politic, or literature, or op-ed) of whether or not she arouses - all that stuff.
Get rid of that stuff and the male gaze isn't a problem. It's just lust, just love. I'll gaze right back.

Oh is that what it means - I couldn't actually understand what half the lyrics meant. There's artistic license, then there's incomprehensible nonsense! But yeah what do I know, I'm not the audience. All those physical attributes are in themselves appealing, but when you put on the ridiculous hair, the ludicrous nails, the makeup, the nonsensical scenarios, chanting gibberish - why not just do the whole thing in CGI? And yeah people get turned on by that too. I think they're probably people for whom perfect isn't enough.
Offline
Yes. You're not the audience, cause it's definitely not incomprehensible for me. And like, mainstream porn isn't our aesthetic either, but plenty of people get off to it, and me too sometimes. So some part of me likes it for sure even if I don't really think I do. Sex is confusing. Sometimes ugly and hot team up together when in opposition to pretty and unchallenging. The erotic mind is a wild place.
"And yeah people get turned on by that too. I think they're probably people for whom perfect isn't enough."
You mean perfect like a nude unshaven woman on a clean bed in a clean room?
I think the thing is, your idea of perfect and other's ideas of perfect is just different. You like things simple and unadorned - or maybe just oh-so-slightly adorned - and that's legit. But that doesn't mean they're wrong. some people like a little hot sauce on their tamales. Some people like a lot - and those are the people who are going to be down with freaky babes like Cardi B and Megan Thee.

Side note I'm also curious about the similarities the WAP video has with Siouxsie And The Banshees "Happy House"

Yup Viv, good stuff; Neil Young & Crazy Horse did a version of I saw her standing there, with the original, intended verse, “she was just 17 & she wasn’t a beauty queen” in typical Crazy Horse style

If you think these videos are about a woman expressing herself, you're very naive. I'm sure she is very sex positive but all of this is the product of a media manipulation machine. It's carefully crafted to get as much sex as possible past the 'editors' on the various platforms. Lyrics which are obscurely articulated so parents don't catch on to what their kids are listening to. They got nipples on Youtube - that's 100 million hits which translates into millions of dollars, not necessarily from YT revenue but wider sales. A lot of clever people have worked together and choreographed this whole thing explicitly to make money. If only they'd put some effort into the music, but they fully realise it's irrelevant - it's about the lyrics, the visuals.

Pretending its not about the money is for other genres entirely.

oh I do love the little line she pops in about her baby Kulture at the end there though! Everything's always about the money but everything is also always about family, about love. I definitely wouldn't call myself naive, but I'd say you are if you don't realise that love and desire rule the world, just as much as power and money do. And that the lines are so, so blurry. Men who think they do it all for money cut a big deal, just before they call their mama, just before they do chores for their sisters, right after resting their heads on breasts, picking up the check, setting up a home alarm system. What's all that for? That media manipulation machine is actually just a bunch of people, hoping someone will appreciate how hard they try every fucking day.
"I was born to flex, diamonds on my neck
I like boardin' jets, I like mornin' sex
But nothing in this world that I like more than Kulture"
Offline
The media manipulation machine is a bunch of people sitting around trying to figure out how to suck as much money as they can from people less educated and less savvy, who don't realise it's being done to them. Taylor Swift does it in her Disney Princess disguise. She knows her fans are mostly tweens, she talks about how much she loves them - then keeps creating more and more merch for them to spend their limited allowance on. If she loved her fans, the merch would come free with downloads.
Every endeavour has multiple motives - money, love, sex, world domination, artistic expression. This one is 95% money, 4% sex, 1% artistic expression.
