Paul Bloom reviews studies into how the way a person is presented in a photograph affects how we appraise their personality. Seeing a photo of just someone's body without their face makes us think of them as less intelligent than we would if we saw their face. Seeing people naked makes us think of them as having less agency but greater capacity for emotion than if we saw them clothed. It's unfortunate that he doesn't cite any of his sources, since we can't really speak to the validity of his claims without seeing the studies he's taken his information from.
Reading this made me appreciate how contributors are portrayed on IFM and ISM with video profiles and artist statements even more. We show them as the intelligent and autonomous people they are and also get to empathise with their feelings in a heightened way. Personality and agency are also so present in IFM videos in each person's individual techniques, and in ISM shoots in their body language. And through posts on the forums we get to interact with them as "immaterial conscious beings" as well. How good is that?
It's an interesting article, let me know what you think of it

Scientific American looks more closely at these studies and has a more positive interpretation of the results: http://www.scientificamerican.com/artic … w-benefits
