Glass ceilings

I was thinking of how the conversation has developed in the 'politik of experience and identity' thread by artemesia when I read this article.

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/08 … 21767.html

I had a male friend who became a single parent and had to give up work. Ask any man if they were to suddenly become a single parent with young children what they'd do and I think you'd find their career plans would be screwed. So why did those plans not include this possibility. Why is the role of child carer automatically handed to women to such an extent that it's a certain dilemma.  If employers were forced by law to consider that anyone has childcare considerations not just women, then all jobs would be designed around that possibility and any working team could include more career opportunities for people who are very young and middle aged as they fill in the time gaps created by this policy. Making it compulsory means a level playing field for all firms throughout the EU or USA or Federal AUS and the benefit is to all firms, because the high talent pool just about doubles as for the 1st time all women can occupy it all their lives.

Re: Glass ceilings

It's interesting isn't it. But here's a reason to move to Brazil eh???Brazilian gay man granted 'maternity' leave for adopted child. He applied to have 4 months maternal leave, instead of the customary 5 days leave ordinarily granted and got it! Yay!

My parents work in IT, it seems very much a young person game, despite the years of experience they have. Lots of age discrimination goes on in the technology sector, unfortunate for them, cause frankly my folks are genius's, and pretty open-minded.
