Re: What have you been into lately?

Re-reviving this thread because its been a while and I've been into some things. What things have you been into?

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (the reboot, not the extended toy ad from the 80's) is my new religion. I'm as insufferable with this as I was when I was telling everyone to see Dirty Computer by Janelle Monae, but REALLY YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS SHOW IT IS AMAZING. It takes a couple episodes to properly get into it, but it's well worth it. The story is really compelling, the characters are complex and brilliantly written, the music is beautiful and epic and wears it's 80's synth heart on its sleeve on a few tracks, and it's one of the most diverse shows I've ever seen in terms of the cast, but also race, gender identity, sexuality, body types etc. The story and characters are extremely well developed and I genuinely think it's one of the best shows to come out in the last decade. I get it if cartoons that are (technically) for kids aren't your thing, but if you like shows like The Legend of Korra, Steven Universe and Adventure Time, you'll like this.

I also binged all of The Queen's Gambit in one go. Hoooooly crap, who knew chess could be so compelling? Anya Taylor-Joy is honestly such an amazing actress and visually it's just so very beautiful. I'm usually pretty wary of things that are insanely hyped on Netflix but it deserves all the praise it gets.

For any 90's Australian kids here, Heartbreak High is FINALLY on Netflix. This is actually kinda huge, because since around 2010, they have been trying to release the entire series on dvd but had issues with music licensing. They couldn't even play re-runs on tv because of it (although oddly enough it airs in the Netherlands constantly). Now all 7 seasons are available and I can finally relive my pre and teen years. It actually holds up really well and is still as well written and groundbreaking as I remember it to be. You also get treated to such classic lines like - "Aw rack off you scrubber!!"

Playing Divinity with my partner and friends. Playing Binding of Isaac myself (obsessively). Studying psychology, playing guitar, listening to over the top rock music, having sexy time with my partner.  Trying not to go mad with Covid and my football team (soccer depending on where you are located) being utterly garbage recently. Watching IFM and having an occasional hand shandy to break up the studying.

Re: What have you been into lately?

I have been watching a lot of British mystery shows like Midsommer Murders and Lewis with relatives.  Its fun to see places I can't visit right now.

I have also had fun with the Life with Althaar podcast.  Living on a broken space station ruled by (rot-13ed spoiler )pneavibebhf plants is a very 2020 kind of story.  https://geminicollisionworks.podbean.com/

I've wanted to play The Binding of Isaac foreverrr. Egads it looks bleak. What over the top rock have you been treating your earholes to? I've been really into The 69 Eyes lately. So very ridiculous, but most excellent indeed.

Re: What have you been into lately?

I love Binding of Isaac. Its is bleak but also cute and comforting in an odd way. The humour is dark if you like that type of thing. I listened to the 69 eyes there. They are pretty cool. Recently I have been listening to the Misfits, Airbourne, Death, Scorpions and Judas Priest. 'Dangerous Ground' by Heat is one I have been enjoying just for over the top nonsense. The scream at the start is tremendous lol.

I'm really, really into unicorns atm.

Like sewing a unicorn costume for my NYE party & making a horn out of fimo to make a head piece out of.

I'm obsessed.

Oh cool! I haven't heard much about whether it was good or not but still intended to watch it after I've gotten through all the other things I need to watch (The Boys, Atlanta, Top of the Lake, and to finish Farscape that the glorious babe Mew recommended to me). I'm glad to hear it's good though!

different companies sell them. They come in different sizes for different plants. Depending on your area, space limitations, etc, sun light aspect; these are great. They're made of thick canvas like breathable fabric so oxygen can get to the roots..
I make my own soil also using compost peat moss and vermiculite. After years of amending my native clay soil where I put my garden, making my own soil and using smart pots requires a lot less labor.
Have Fun.. Grow your own food; watch the plants Grow

Re: What have you been into lately?

Farscape is great, although the first two seasons aren't quite as good as the others. I love the ep in which the actors all switch roles. Watchmen is just as much a sequel as an adaptation, as the events of the comic/movie are in the past. You will NEVER guess where they go with it. NEVER. Also, Trent Reznor, whom autocorrect believes to be named "Trent Rezone," does a fantastic soundtrack.

Ooh I shall defs check it out!! I'll let you know if I guessed where they go with it. I'm still on season 2 of Farscape but have loved pretty much every moment thus far. I even bought myself a Moya necklace on behalf of my partner for my birthday, haha. An old friend of mine wrote a few episodes too, so I'm looking forward to/slightly worried about seeing his work.

I've also been watching Star Trek Next Gen. I'm up to season 3 and love it so much. I saw it at the time it aired via my best friend, but was often completely lost and would be too distracted by Riker's hypnotic beard to follow what was happening. Measure of a Man is one of the best episodes I've seen so far, not just on NG but on tv in general. AI learning about love and/or mortality is my absolute favourite topic in sci-fi, and the way they handled it here was really beautiful. Data is my favourite character by a pretty big margin (followed by Dr Pulaski and Riker) and it's such brilliantly done sci-fi.

So cool you mentioned two my top most favorite shows! I basically love every episode of both in some way ... so that'll keep me from needing to quantify too much.

Farscape:
It has a really awesome way of contrasting serious with unserious. The unfortunate thing is few people get when I make a reference to it in every day. "She take the stone!" is up there...Their concepts/aliens are some of the most creative I've seen. Though, thankfully, some of them have been taken up by later scifi/fantasy stories. Looking at you, Groot.

The Budong - of course if life's plentiful in the universe then we just might encounter organisms truly HUGE.
Moya - honestly, maybe we should be designing ships that act more like organisms? Imagine if losing a container ship was more like seeding an area of sea floor than an ecological spill/mass-polluting event (for instance)?
Zotoh Zhaan - her species are sentient humanoids evolved from plants. I think the spirituality of her character is really amazing, too. She's plenty humble but still capable of kicking some serious butt. I really wish that were a more common trope.
Scorpius - easily the evil character I harken back to when I'm really motivated to take on an enemy. Doesn't hurt that I sympathized with his needed mental cooling tech. As a chronic migrainer, I wish I could pop in a cooling rod or wear a helmet designed to cool my head, for sure.

There's also two (or more?) red head characters that come up later in the series. They're both pretty strong and hot, but I'll leave it at that to avoid spoilers if you're not past them. They're both characters showing the show never says something's too far out there to explore.

Star Trek TNG:

So all of the characters really explore or make some interesting points. I think the Betazed actually come to mind a lot lately in response to society's ever increasing response to social media. Really all of the telepathic species are relevant. i.e. Either figure out how to accept that people are going to be people and have the whole, entire range of human emotions and beliefs and they'll be reflected in their social media - and we can become a society more like the Betazed where all such things seem to become mundane after a point. Or, we can constantly overreact to social media, crucify many martyrs, and eventually become ruled by totalitarian regimes or outright anarchy ala the Romulans or early Vulcans.

I can't rank favorite characters, though. Even Wesley Crusher's got a neat enough arc for me to be entertained by watching. The Q stand out as Roddenberry's warning that amongst the stars we could find ourselves truly humbled before a downright deistic inquisition. Or, maybe he was saying the cosmos simply are that humbling, if we could perceive them (to get a little mystical). I like to think I've grown up with Picard as a role model. I don't know how that reads, but as someone who's dad taught him "antidisestablishmentarianism" as a word and way of life at the age of 5-6 (he was so proud of himself - still is) I could probably do a lot worse than to choose to model after Picard. (Dad's not the best role model to this day in many ways. Women say he's very sweet though - before or after they dump him, too. lol.)

Picard's kind of a type-A about sticking to the rules, until something clashes deeply with his deeper moral compass. Then it's break stuff and speechify a "teachable moment." I've seen some people voice criticism of his character, which probably just underscores him as a well developed character.

Data. So I actually had a best friend in college who we all agreed was 'our' Data. He's the guy I had to explain how to use a ceiling fan to in our first study session together. His deepest passion was logic and math. Anything that wasn't logically based (even my working out) really drew his criticism. Years later, we found out he was on adderall the entire time (this was around the time the use of adderall really started to take off). The guy also single handidly ruined many of the curves for my tests and thus my GPA. All of which is to say, I love that guy and in part because of Data. Data's a great counter example to the modern day conception that all AI must eventually don stainless steel bodies and Kill All Humans. (I tire of that trope.) Maybe they'll envy some part of our experience. Or maybe they'll pity us and seek to make a better society with us. It's not like we're setting high bars for them to exceed. I definitely like Data's almost complete objective view on things. He doesn't dissemble to avoid topics he doesn't want to face, for instance. He also shows that you can be the strongest or smartest person in the room and not have to flex it frivolously. In a sense, he's really crazy humble - a good counterpoint to the Vulcans and the Klingons, for that matter.

YES!! Pulaski is absolutely one of my favourites on the show. She's so clever and sassy and cool. Also underrated imo. I really love that her and Worf became friends. I'm surprised I don't hear about her more (although I do try to avoid as many TNG spoilers as I can, as I'm only up to season 4 so I try not to look up too much on it). I love that she was in the classic series also.

Re: What have you been into lately?

I hope this isn't a spoiler, but I think the reason Dr. Pulaski is only on season 3 is that she was a replacement when Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher) was on maternity leave. I like that the transporter creeps her out. TNG stays good, and the finale is great, but there are some pretty out-there eps in the last 2 seasons. Keep us posted Red!

As for Picard, I liked it a lot. It was indeed a great idea to bring Sev back, but my own fave character is Jean-Luc himself, so maybe that's one reason I liked it. (If you like Data you should watch it too though.)
