Fucking hell Oscar Isaac in that film is so fucking hot. I'll give that show a watch at some point soon. Maybe this weekend? I had gardening plans but Melbourne scoffed at those plans.

Something that I'm always into is fan made Doctor Who compilations. These are a couple of my faves. So many insanely beautiful quotes. They often make me cry and more than once I've had to collect myself before talking to a co-worker because tears were streaming down my face. Ugh, it really is just the greatest show ever made (fight me) old AND new Who.

I recently preordered a table top RPG experience that is based on the Alien series of movies; D&D meets survival-horror, which sounds awesome to me. There are mechanics where your character can become increasingly stressed out, which can either increase your survival skills/sensibilities, or slowly unravel your sanity until you attack other players involuntarily.

Oh my, I'm extremely inexperienced! While I've been meaning to play D&D forever, I only played it for the first time this year. The version I have is my partner's from when he was a kid, so it's a simplified version, that only has battle dice and no 20 sided dice or anything. It's still an official D&D set, just super basic for the noobs like myself. Have you ever played HeroQuest? I used to play that when I was a kid, and it's pretty much exactly the same. I'm really excited to expand my horizons (and skills) though. So far my favourite class to play as is Rogue. I like being a sneaky stealth person that also uses long range weapons. The character I play as always has to check the room for traps before anyone goes in, it makes me feel like a vital part of the group, even if I'm not magic like the Elf or strong like the Fighter.

The Alien set sounds so rad! I love how there can be a D&D style game for basically any book/movie imaginable. It really is an incredible game. You must let me know how it goes once it arrives!

What's some of your favourite D&D (or just table top RPG in general) games? What's your favourite class? What sets would you recommend to a newby?

Honestly, I cut my teeth on D&D 5, which I believe is the most recent version. I haven't experimented much beyond that, but I think any table top RPG is a fun experience. Part of the fun is just really diving into your character, living in their shoes. It's almost like acting. I have a friend who's one of the nicest guys I've met, and his character is a complete arrogant blowhard (the polar opposite of him).

I myself tend to play Cleric (and I'm by no means religious in real life). It's just fun to be this heroic holy warrior who heals the wounded and wants to save the world.

Oh nice! The Healer is SO vital that it sort of intimidates me. Hnnnnggggh RESPONSIBILITYYYYY...

I'm a bit intimidated by the RP aspect to it, but I'm sure once I've delved deeper I'll embrace it completely. I love that your friend gets to live out their jerky fantasies via the game. Do you play up your character much? Are you a calming influence on your in-game arrogant friend?

I wish I'd kept my brother's HeroQuest game, although I suspect there would be pieces missing, as he has always been rubbish at keeping sets of things together/intact. I looked up copies online but they go for a couple hundred dollerydoos!! One day I'll play it again and this time I won't only play as the Dwarf, as my brother was always the Barbarian or the Elf, (the latter I DESPERATELY wanted to be) but as it was "his" set, he got to choose who I played as. Older siblings man...

Mildly SPOILERISH for the Dark Crystal movie!

In my opinion, it is objectively good. Same world as the film obviously, but such a different feeling. So many characters, so, so much more lore. I felt rather sad watching the film afterwards, after seeing just how much Thra had lost.

I was worried about the nostalgia colouring my judgement, but it really is such a different feel, and can be enjoyed even by those who haven't watched the movie. And that cast, yes, everyone is spectacular in it, and none of the performances felt flat. Favourite character is Deet, she's just too cute.

Highly, highly recommended. But yeah, definitely not for pupaphobes. Some scenes are traumatic even without that phobia.

yeah, some people dis tabletop gaming with "oh, people are just using fantasy to avoid real life" but sometimes you don't want to swindle the beautiful heiress out of her fortune or immolate 13 1/2 goblins with fire or be the clueless know-at-all who dooms everyone in a horror scenario. And sometimes you try something out in a game and next thing you know you are hiking through the mountains, marching in kit or negotiating with people who are very strange to you! And like C.S. Lewis said, we call people who ban escapism "gaolers."

Its great that there are so many versions of dungeons and dragons now and a decent range of other games like Vampire and Gumshoe. The business side seems hopeless but so is the naked-on-the-internet business and it keeps Viva and Hyperballad and co employed!

Reviving this old thread to share some things that have been pumping my lady balls lately.

Shows - Siren. The basic premise of the show is that a marine biologist couple befriend a mermaid but it gets into some surprisingly meaty topics. It's an odd one, because I'm not confident to recommend it to just anyone... at first glance the show appears to be soap opera trash, but as you get into it more it's actually a surprisingly thoughtful commentary on sexism, racism, genocide, loss of culture, the environment and capitalism/"progress". The cast are diverse and good actors for the mostpart and it's surprisingly really well written (full disclosure though, the male marine biologist is bland af and easily the weakest actor on the show). Any Australians interested in seeing it can find the first two seasons on Stan.

Dracula - Mew recommended I watch this, and while I haven't seen the last episode (so no spoilers!) I'm enjoying it immensely. I was a bit dubious about the Count being so dang handsome, as I tend to prefer him being a bit weird and/or creepy looking but Claes Bang is exceptional and I can't say enough good things about Dolly Wells' Sister Agatha. Holy heck. Fucking well done Moffat/Gatiss.

Doctor Who (obviously) - I'm up to the 4th Doctor and while my heart still belongs to the 3rd Doctor, I really love it and can see why Tom Baker's run was so well received.

Alias Grace - I'd already seen it a year or so ago but re-watched it recently and it is such a fucking amazing series. Margaret Atwood had a lot to do with its production, so it's quite faithful to the book. Sarah Polley wrote it and it's directed by Mary Harron (American Psycho) so it's grimy and visceral and beautiful and just straight up brilliant.

Music - Last year I finally heard/saw the video that was the basis for all the Jimmy Barnes memes I'd seen where he "features" on a song by Kirin J. Callinan and Alex Cameron. I absolutely LOVE "bad" amateur musicians - a lot of which I happen to think are genuinely talented and have merit as artists such as Mark Gormley, Lisa Gail, Malinda Herman, and Icy Spicy Leoncie (the latter lost me a bit when she released a pro-Trump song though) but I was ready to just appreciate Alex Cameron as one of those youtube musicians that will never really make it into the mainstream but fuuuuuuck me he is doing well for himself. It turns out he's actually a rather good musician? But is just super awkward looking and a bit odd. He's also dating Jemima Kirke!?! (Jessa from Girls). Runnin' Outta Luck gives me immense joy and I listen to it on repeat often.

The Human League are also currently my main jam. I can't believe how insanely late to THL party I am. Fascination and Love Action are two of my faves so far. Philip Oakey is so fucking hot too. Hnnngh!

I've also rediscovered Sing When You're Winning by Robbie Williams. He was my main man when I was 15-17 (he was also one of the first people I used as masturbatory material) so it's nice hearing him again. Although it's not on that album, Come Undone is an exceptional song.

I haven't seen or heard or played as many things as I normally would because I was given a surprise puppy from my Mum for xmas and he takes up a LOT of my attention, what with being the cutest puppy in the world and all. I named him Wilfred after Wilfred Mott from Doctor Who. He suits the name, as both are quite adept at making you burst into tears by just looking at you and/or by just being so. fucking. cute! He's half Jack Russell and half Dalmatian, although my Mum saw his Mum and she apparently didn't look very Dalmatian-ey. He has LOADS of freckers, hopefully he doesn't get too big though, as my house has a pretty small backyard and isn't really suitable for a lanky Dalmatian. I would die for him without a second thought. He is my everything.

Wow you know so much about so many things!

In between Star Trek binges on the weekend with my boyfriend, I'm currently obsessed with Shadow Hunters. Everyone is hot and young and it has gorgeous man on man warloc/shadowhunter sex.. or at least implied sex... this is a Disney show, after all. and pretty much all the sex and love is golden and angel gorgeous or dark and shadow-vampirey and I'm here for it.

Also I've read all the books, so I had to watch the show. Right?

It starts out REALLY trashy but gets better. They learn how to choreograph a fight scene at least. They're always looking for someone or something, so I enjoy texting my boyfriend - we have to find clary! now we have to find jace! now we have to find the mortal cup! we have to find valentine! etc ad nauseum

I also watched Rick n Morty new season (it was ok), 2nd season of You (pretty good and Victoria Pedretti is sooo beautiful to me), and excited to have my weekly feel-amazing drip of The Good Place back.

Movies... I saw Parasite! It was absolutely amazing. I know I would need to see a lot more films to have anything useful to say about 2019's releases. But yeah Parasite was great. I haven't seen a Korean film I haven't really loved.

I'm grudgingly re-reading Wicked and Son of a Witch, I don't know why I read things I don't especially want to read, but once I start I need to finish! I have completely exhausted the world's supply of original Cixin Liu novels, aka possibly the world's most epic science fiction novelist. I even read the short stories, Wandering Earth - and I really hate short stories. But these blew my mind, of course. Everything he writes is mind-blowing.

I have a stack of Chinese sci-fi books I bought all in a ferver, so I will enjoy spending 2020 getting through those.

I'm also slow-reading Dark Emu, which is an interesting anthropological non-fiction book about how Indigenous Australians weren't actually a nomadic culture.

Ooh Viva I want to see Parasite! I've heard excellent things indeed. My old housemate used to watch Shadow Hunters and I would watch it with her occasionally (and make fun of the sometimes questionable plot/actors/characters) but I can definitely see getting into it if I let myself. You is a show I rather like to binge. I thought season 2 was rather good and Victoria Pedretti is leaps and bounds better than Guinevere Beck who was absolutely insufferable. Although having a character who's name is "Love" made me audibly groan. Why does Joe insist on stalking women with the stupidest names possible.

I DO like sexy girls, and while I'm not a huge fan of covers, I rather enjoy them more if it's for a song I'm not really into in the first place so I will deffos check out that song asap.

What was originally a casual interest with Alex Cameron has now turned into a full-blown obsession. I wasn't prepared for how much I would love his music, especially given that I found some of his lyrics extremely problematic until I found out that his first two albums are based on his stage persona which is that of a jaded failed musician, and most of his songs are actually satirical. His more recent album has an amazing song called Far From Born Again and I'm goddam in love with it. A few other stand out tracks from him are Country Figs, Stranger's Kiss, The Chihuahua, Politics of Love, Divorce, Bad for the Boys, Real Bad Lookin' and Internet. Sometimes he sounds a bit Bowie, other times Springsteen, sometimes he's another creature altogether. Ugh, so good though!

TV shows - I'm super into British comedy panel shows. Would I Lie To You, QI, and Big Fat Quiz are on high rotation in my house. I'm also rather into coming of age drama/comedies. Work in Progress is a really well done and thoughtful depiction of a middle aged queer woman coming into her own. Season 2 of Sex Education and The End of the Fucking World were great and are probably even better than their first seasons and My Mad Fat Diary is an underrated gem. Also Jelle's Marble Runs has recently put out new videos on Youtube with Marbula One Racing and it's amazing. There's only the qualifier and one race up so far but it's incredible to see something that was originally just one (sometimes two) guy's passion project/hobby turn into something so beloved. It's even broadcast on ESPN. I genuinely love it like people who love regular sportsballs do and find myself saying things like "we did pretty well that race" when referring to "my" team (TEAM GALACTIC FOREVERRRR!!).

Artists - Charlyne Yi who is probably best know for the film she wrote and starred in with Michael Cera called Paper Heart, or for playing Jodi the cute stoner in Knocked Up also writes poetry, songs and does amazing art that should be much more known than it is, as she has a beautiful and important message in everything she does. I highly recommend following her on instagram, as she is brilliant and hilarious and heartbreaking and complex. While I've always appreciated his art and the Doctor Who episode featuring him is one of my most loved episodes ever, I've recently obsessively gotten into Van Gogh. I've watched so many biographies about him and also saw Loving Vincent which was BEYOND amazing. 100% recommend it.

I can never remember where I stopped with the Magicians so I can never finish it and am hyper wary of spoilers - it's like this for me with both books and show O.O

Redbird, are you still into Dnd? My boyfriend got obsessed after a friend flew up and DM'd a oneshot for us. Him and his best friend watch puzzling amounts of Critical Role, and boyfriend has gone all DM on me. Slowly he accumulated books, and then all his waking hours were consumed with DnD study and story dev, then we talked about it at a party and a bunch of friends were super keen, and so he got the Curse of Straud book and now we've well and truly started. It's so awesome and wholesome and hilarious and such a great social connection. The more we play the more bonded we are as a group - though we are all old friends, this is another level! and also, the more we play the more obsessed I'm getting with my Tiefling sorceress urchin.... been drawing her, and we have a group message where we write each other details about our characters pasts.. it's so freakin good.

Ooh you're a Tiefling!?! So, so cool! While browsing the different characters you can be, a Tiefling was one of the ones that interested me most, but I think I decided against it in the end because of the discrimination they face within the narrative. There's so many things to consider when selecting your player, what was it about a Tiefling that appealed to you? If you're a sorceress, do you also have the ability to control animals? Or is that just a Druid skill...
I'm still not 100% sure what I want to be, but a Halfling is the one that appeals to me most so far, and also what I always play when we've played the basic D&D. I love their sneakiness, thieving skills and ability to contribute quietly to the campaign.

I'm still very interested in getting stuck into it but since my housemates moved out we haven't really done anything about it, but I'm very keen to get the Castle Ravenloft set which is apparently a good place to start for a total noooooob like myself. I love how involved D&D is, if I had a Doctor Who D&D you would probably never see me again.

I liked a Tiefling because I thought it would be fun to play the push and pull of a character with sort of demonic tendencies but who has an interest in lawfulness. She's not interested in being good for the sake of being good, but she's irritated by the idea that she doesn't have full autonomy, so she'd prefer not to steal, for example, even though her demon blood means she would be naturally inclined to steal. Just out of sheer stubborness. I also felt it'd be a cool race for an Urchin, which is a sort of untrusting outcast... I usually play characters with high persuasion, but with my character I've been learning to rely on high-lvl intimidation which is actually really fun.

The sorceress aspect is fun.. I chose a "divine" origin which increases the tension around moral alignment. She got power from an angel right after she watched the women she loved die... right before the campaign started. So she can cast sorcerer spells and also cleric spells, but is generally completely confused and has no idea why or how magic works. It's all super complicated! I wouldn't know how to do anything if not for my boyfriend and his best friend who are super good with all the numbers and details.

You would make an amaaaaazing halfling rogue... they should have hair as long as yours IRL and have to wear it in complex updo's not to trip over it.

Ps. I think if you want to make a group happen, someone needs to just bite the bullet and be the DM/organiser... not everyone is cut out to DM, but every group needs someone who's keen to take that on.

Holy crap, your backstory is awesome! I also really like that she's an urchin too. I think I might choose a Halfling, it's the one I liked most from the start so I should just follow my gut. I also thankfully have others that are better at numbers and the terminology and such. It can be so confusing/intimidating but it's something I really want to pursue. The main issue is finding the time for everyone to do it, as the campaigns can go so long! I'll be sure to fill you in on everything once I do though

I've seen a couple Doctor Who tabletop games and I suspect that they would very much be my jam.
