Re: This Is Important

thanks Mew, I cried reading this. I was just thinking and talking about this issue with my boyfriend and his family this weekend. I also study masculinity - every chance I have to do an independent research project, I focus it on mens' mental health. So this topic is really close to my heart.

we do see more ads about men changing their behaviour, and calling other men out on violent, dangerous, or otherwise sexist behaviour. I wonder sometimes what would happen if we also made ads discussing the statistics of emotional abuse men experience in hetero relationships, and letting men know they don't have to stay, they don't have to hit, they don't have to take it. They can talk to someone or leave. They can express their feelings with words. I wonder how many men feel emotionally abused in their relationships and lack the ability to even conceptualise it - because of internalised toxic ideas like "men are stupid", "men are bad at relationships", "men shouldn't cry" "men are the violent ones" and "men should protect women". Among others.

There's no excuse for violence. But I wonder how much of it could be prevented if men like this one were educated about the dangerous potential of emotional abuse, and encouraged to talk about it, or leave relationships that don't make them feel good, rather than bottling it up and exploding and using "violence as a tool" (quote from the article) to try and make their relational problems go away.

Re: This Is Important

Very sad and the bullying behavior starts at a young age; families should be vigilant so it can be stopped, also at a young age.
