Re: What have you been into lately?

Off-topic of GoT, but something else I've been getting into lately is my bod. After my last ISM shoot (which is technically nothing special) I was just really "feeling it" in that regard. My belly is soft and squishy and I think it's really cute. My bum, boobs, and thighs are the size I've always wanted them to be and now that I've found more clothes that fit me I feel like a babe. It was a bit of a process but I'm super into my specific look now, and have found that I've shown myself a lot more love physically and mentally.

Body image is something I've struggled with my whole life, and it's a really nice feeling to finally be comfortable in the meat sack I happen to inhabit.   smile

Well good! You should feel like a babe. Because you’re a total babe! (“Babe” for me means someone’s a happy combination of self aware, communicative, attractive, and sexy.)

As for GoT...I’ve enjoyed every day of this week knowing I’ve got an awesome finale to see at the end of this weekend. I’ll watch it alone at home with my self-anointed Lord of a cat in my lap.

Hey Red.

As a matter of fact, yeah I have seen Outrageous Fortune. Good series as well as the prequel Westside. It's pretty amazing how close to the era they got in terms of authenticity. And whenever you think of a OF or an WS episode, Hello Sailor just springs to mind. Use to love listening to Kiwi music growing up. E.G. Sweet Lovers by the Holidaymakers, Why Does Love Do This To Me by the Exponents.

Never got to play Detroit Becoming Human but judging by the weather today I admit to have a played Heavy Rain a couple of times. Made by the same guy.  Interesting about the amount of choices you made in that game. Loved the soundtrack too.
And I agree with Viva. Some games can be too long. One of my favorite games, Metal Gear Solid, is notorious not only for the cutting edge stealth playing but also for its looong cut scenes. Some of the time it's like both a game and a movie. Made by the same man who is making Death Stranding. Very intriguing trailers.
And the Edith Finch game looks interesting. I'll have to check it out.

BTW, Viv, you look gorgeous in that pic smile

Haha "Red", I love it! I used to live with a 6ft redheaded GODDESS and I'd call her Big Red while she'd call me Little Red. It was all very cute.

Oh man yeah I forgot about Westside! I really love that show. They've been spot-on with casting when it comes to the actors who play younger versions of the OF characters, and the show as a whole is a lot more well paced, balanced and less soap opera-ey than OF became in later seasons (WTF was with season 6, really) but I find myself often missing Robyn Malcolm and Grant Bowler. I have a very intense crush on both of them (the latter crush being since I was 11) and I've noticed and missed their presence quite a bit. The sets and costumes are absolute perfection though and there's very little I can fault the show for.

Oh man I love MGS! It was one of the first games I ever played that had cut scenes that I didn't find tedious or want to skip, and yes Hideo Kojima is indeed making Death Stranding!! It's his chance at a bit of revenge after his Silent Hills game that he worked on with Guillermo Del Toro  was cancelled, and he even cast Norman Reedus in it again.  I'm so excited for the game, I'm sure it's going to be amazing, the talent behind it is so incredible it HAS to be surely!

Apologies for being out of the loop. Am back home now smile

First off, Viv, Heavy Rain is like a precursor to Detroit where every decision has to be made at every moment.  Main story is about four people saving a kid's life. Really edge of your seat stuff. Another one before that was a PS2 game called Indigo Prophecy. This one has supernatural elements to it, but also have the same decision making rules to it. SPOILER ALERT, if the player makes the right decisions, they get to be involved in a couple of sex scenes wink

I watched Edith Finch finally. Really nice, in depth narrative and intriguing history. Another one I played is called Firewatch set in the 80s. It about a guy who adjusts to life in the forest before a great firestorm.

I was a fan of Frank Whelan (of the Speights ads, "Good on ya, mate!") and of the West sisters, both their OF and outside of it.  Pork Pie is another one of my favorites from NZ that has both sisters in it. Another movie you'd want to watch is the Breaker Uppers.

As for TV series, I finished watching The Bad Seed as well as Fresh Eggs. The former is a dark crime series and the latter is a dark comedy series with the actress from Wentworth.  It was a bit hard to watch it but I enjoyed it in the end.

Re: What have you been into lately?

I love Firewatch! It's set in Colorado (where I am from) so a man I knew used to play it to feel closer to me, which made me feel very special.

Heavy Rain sounds so right up my alley.

I've been watching a few things.. mainly doing a rewatch of Game of Thrones inbetween new eps! I am a fiend... it's so good though. I also watched all of a series called The Bold Type which is about 3 girls living their best lives and killing it professionally in New York City. In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelmingly cynical, I love the positive messaging.

I've tried to find a new show on netflix but so far everything I start there is just kind of bad. Open to recommendations!

I follow Claire Chitham (Aurora from OF) on instagram so I've heard of Fresh Eggs for a while now but still haven't seen it. I'm not sure how to get it here, there's probably a NZ streaming service or something I can look into though. I recently saw Goodbye Pork Pie, and I really loved it. I will definitely check out Pork Pie next, because I love the idea of a son doing a remake of his father's movie. Also it has quite a lot of OF people in it (as well as James Rolleston who I've only seen as a child actor in Boy) so it definitely has the potential to be pretty excellent.

I'm glad you liked Edith Finch! It's nothing particularly outstanding, but it's interesting and dark and thoughtfully done. I also played Firewatch around the same time. I rather liked it but are slightly salty about the fact that it won indie game of the year over Stardew Valley at the 2016 Golden Joystick Awards. I was also playing it with my friend who is a park ranger and he was getting extremely frustrated at me for not responding to orders from the radio quickly enough, so maybe I'm just associating it with some minor stress and pressure from my pal.

The world is a garbage fire but this duet with Barbra and Judy makes me so happy and sad and gives me shivers every time. A really stunning and beautiful moment between two incredible women.

Re: What have you been into lately?

I recently binged both seasons of Fleabag and it was fucking excellent. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is incredible and it's really well written and egads is it ever relateable if you've ever been a bit broken and therefore acted like a bit of a shit. I've also been getting into the habit of watching Bob Ross videos when I get home from work. His voice and art is so soothing, it's perfect for post-work unwinding and in some videos he even has adorable animals (mostly squirrels) which just further enhances those splendid calming vibes. smile

Re: What have you been into lately?

Ha, there was just recently an article about Bob Ross in the New York Times (happy little trees were mentioned).

Also – I was reminded of this on the other thread, where the verb “to pash” was discussed – I wanted to recommend the comics Giant Days and (by the same guy) Bad Machinery. I guess I like the former a bit more, but that may be because I got it bad for Esther the goth. The characters are charming and the drawings are amazing. Recently my fave character from Bad Machinery showed up in Giant Days, which was a hoot. Check em out!

Ooh yes, I've seen Giant Days around but have never read it, I shall definitely check it out though! It's been ages since I've read comics or graphic novels, which is weird because for a long while they were the primary things I would read. I'm currently getting through a collection of short stories by Henry James, but will put Giant Days on my list of things to soon check out.

Re: What have you been into lately?

I've been obsessed with Kate Bush lately. Mad obsessed. I basically don't listen to anything else at the mo. When I was a kid there were several artists who my Mum particularly disliked and Kate was one of them (she wouldn't even like me playing Tori Amos because she thought she sounded too similar) so for years I thought I didn't like her much. HOW VERY WRONG I WAS.  My top 5 favourite songs of hers are - Cloudbusting, Hounds of Love, Love and Anger, The Big Sky, and Running up that Hill. Ugh, she is avant garde pop perfection!!

Gosh, there was a period of my life i listened to Wuthering Heights upwards of 20 times a day. Kate Bush is nothing short of a musical genius. It also helps that she's kinda cute smile

Re: What have you been into lately?

I have become absolutely obsessed with Super Mario Maker 2. If you're unfamiliar, its a game on the Nintendo Switch where you can build your own Super Mario Bros. levels. It's been a really fun creative exercise being able to build your own video game levels with a relatively easy-to-use system. And you can share everything you make online.

If any of you happen to have it, my Maker ID is DN7 R64 W0G!

Oh man IKR!? She is goddam gorgeous (still is too). Musically I find her similar to Prince in that she can be a tad too avant garde sometimes and will release songs that are just bonkers and a struggle to listen to, but in general she is pop perfection, and can write and produce a hit like few others can.

Oh rad!! My partner is keen to get that game. I've seen a few videos and reviews of it and it looks really awesome. It's something I previously wouldn't have considered to be my jam, but since I got into Stardew Valley I've really enjoyed creating and organising things. If I get it any time soon I'll check out your games for sure!

I've been obsessed with Contrapoints on youtube lately (a good one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdvM_pRfuFM;  a bit less tame one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9mspMJTNEY).  Her videos are a marvel of production and intelligence.  She perfectly explains the ideas of transgender philosophy (e.g., ways of being, performativity) and its potential conflict with poststructural feminism in a way that I have never heard from fellow scholars.

Re: What have you been into lately?

wow she's amazing. the incredible production design and quality combined with the intellectual ferocity really blew me away! I care about transgender politics but I've never really delved deeply into the analysation of trans-things - mostly because I don't want to be disrespectful. This amazing window onto the deeper ramifications and subleties of the concept, presented by a transwoman who can really speak to them, was extremely valuable for me.

I also liked the second vid - talking and feeling about beauty is so complex. I really feel about the intense conflict she mentions when she says she knows she's got so much privilege but it doesn't change the way she feels and her desires... that she hurts so much about this and that inside she just wants to be a pretty rich white girl. I think a lot of people feel this way about privilege, in fact I think the heart of why privilege is so complex a concept is because people
a) are in so much pain and it doesn't help them to feel forced to conceptualise themselves as lucky when they don't feel lucky inside at all and
b) even if they want to feel different because they understand that the way they feel, or what they want, is "wrong", they feel deep inside they can't change what they want, and so that just becomes repression, guilt, resentment, and anger...

anyway, super interesting stuff. I haven't felt my curiosity and interest kindled by these types of discussions in awhile. Such a joy to go deeper.

thanks!

Her video on Jordan Peterson is another solid gold entry...if you also despise Jordan Peterson smile: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LqZdkkBDas

Before I found her videos, I felt much the same way--I deeply cared about transgender rights but I had no frame of reference to make it into something I could relate to.  I would teach my classes the value of love, acceptance, and social justice, but I felt that I was pantomiming an understanding I didn't really have--something that disturbed me greatly.  In my head, I would 'accuse' transwomen of performing stereotypes of 'womaness' (e.g., 'feminine' stylizations of the body, altering one's voice or walk) using Foucault and Butler--thoughts I regret after watching her videos and realizing I didn't really understand.  I think there are many people that share this feeling after watching her videos.

One thing I truly resent about Contrapoints is that she looks better in two different genders than I can look in one!

Re: What have you been into lately?

A bit of a cross-over with the Podcasts thread, but I'm currently listening to a podcast called "How To Be A Girl", which is made by a mother of a trans child. I have felt really conflicted about hormone therapy for kids going into puberty - so learning more about real life trans kids is really helpful.

Episodes are really short - like 10 mins each - and I really love the narrator's tone - she is simple, calm, emotional, clear, rational, poetic. My favourite kind of person.

Re: What have you been into lately?

A game I played on the weekend that was extremely excellent is Gris. It's a fairly short indie game that deals with loss and depression in a beautiful water colour setting. You work your way through the environment and as you progress you add colour to the game's palette. Gameplay-wise it's similar to Ori and the Blind Forest (albeit less challenging) in that you are mainly just jumping and progressing through the levels but you also have to do some puzzle solving to collect stars for a constellation. It has ridiculously moving music and it has some of the most beautiful animation I've ever seen, in a game or otherwise. It's currently on sale on Nintendo Switch, and I highly very much recommend.

I also recently watched Piercing, a horror film on Netflix. The premise is pretty interesting, a wannabe serial killer hires a call girl with the intention of killing her but gets more than he bargained for when she ends up being a tad bonkers herself. It is shot wonderfully and is somewhat art-housey without being just an abstract mess (I'm not a huge fan of art-house films as a rule) but I'm also not entirely sure I liked the film? I think I did though. It definitely stayed with me. I also really enjoyed The Perfection (also on Netflix). At first glance it seems like a Black Swan rip off but I was pleasantly surprised by it. Funnily enough, both of those films star someone from Girls (Charlie and Marnie respectively). Lately I've been finding myself intrigued by horror movies that are unsettling but make you think over the themes contained within long after you've seen it.
