Ooh thank you!! I've heard (and like) Ultravox and The Stranglers and the rest I've heard by name but not their actual music except for Reasons To Be Cheerful by Ian Dury (also Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick was used on a Samboy chips ad in the 80's!!). Thank you so much for the excellent suggestions!! It is even better that they're  from someone who was there. Did you like those bands at the time, or were just they just "around"? Did you see any of them live?

Re: What music have you been enjoying lately?

OK, Redbird, twist my arm! 8-)

You should know first that in the 80s I was just discovering not only new wave but also the glorious prog rock of the golden 70s [*sigh*], which I had missed, and so the new wave I liked tended to be more proggy, in some sense, than poppy (did not like the Go-Gos at all, for example, or Soft Cell). In fact I didn’t like new wave much at all until the summer of 1981, when my college summer school roommate was horrified by this and played me the Ramones, Gang of Four (Solid Gold had just come out), and Ian Dury (including “Hit Me”!) until I got it (about halfway through the third playing of “Sheena is a Punk Rocker,” as I recall).

I had a college radio show that fall, and strange as it may sound nowadays, we grouped the following bands more or less together as “new wave”: those three, plus the Psychedelic Furs, Ultravox, the Stranglers, Chameleons UK, Echo & the Bunnymen, U2 [!], Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Cure, Bauhaus, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, Television, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Elvis Costello, Bill Nelson, Thomas Dolby, Japan, Simple Minds, The Police, The Clash, The Jam, Joy Division/New Order, and XTC [the last two of whom you mention in your first post]. John Foxx, btw, was the lead singer/writer on Ultravox’s first three records, before they got big, and those records are punkier than, say, Vienna. His first solo record, Metamatic, though, is wonderfully icy synth-pop.

I liked all of these, especially Television (first record), Gang of Four (first two records) and Talking Heads (first four records), but again, I was listening just as much to prog and space music as well. On the other hand, some prog is not that far away from the bands I mentioned, especially in the early 80s, and indeed influenced or even worked with them: Bowie of course, Brian Eno, Roxy Music, Peter Gabriel, Robert Fripp/King Crimson. So we didn’t distinguish prog and new wave as much as you might think.

I didn’t see any of these people in concert, alas, although I did see Television and Gang of Four much later (when it didn’t matter quite so much …).

In the next few years, after college, (along with lots more prog/fusion/space etc.) I came to know Yello, Tuxedomoon, Xymox, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil, David Sylvian (from Japan, the band that is), Kate Bush, Jane Siberry, and Yellow Magic Orchestra (and solo records from same: Yukihiro Takahashi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono), all of whom are in the post-punk ballpark, more or less, although again leaning toward prog.

Thus endeth the history lesson. That should keep you busy! As a huge fan of this particular artist, though, I would say if you listen to *any* of this, check out Bill Nelson’s early 80s material: The Love That Whirls, Chimera, and Quit Dreaming and Get on the Beam for starters. In fact it is ENTIRELY YOUR FAULT that “Do You Dream In Colour” has been running through my head for the past day or so 8-)

Re: What music have you been enjoying lately?

Howland thank you so much!! I absolutely adore hearing stories of people first discovering music that I also love (although I do get  insanely jealous sometimes, for example my Mum saw Arthur Brown perform Fire at a tiny pub in London several months before the song was even released).

Normally it bothers me if I can hear how derivative a band or artist is, but in the case of a lot of these bands I actually really love it. It must have been a particularly fun and exciting time to be making music, with the early days of synths and when a generally more creative and punky vibe was around. Ohhhh to have been born 20 years earlier...

I'm currently listening to Bill Nelson. I was going to start from the start, but I see that he is what you would probably call RIDICULOUSLY PROLIFIC!? According to his wikipedia page, he has released roughly 2 albums a year since 1981!? And that's just the solo stuff! So I've started with The Love That Whirls and so far I love it! Thank you so much for your stories and suggestions. I will keep you updated on my progress. xo

Hey RB, great to hear that you are enjoying Bill’s tunes. I’m also flattered that you think I might know what “Bowie AF” means. (As it happens I do, but I think not everyone my age would.) Anyway, Bowie! My fave Bowie is from the new wave period: Station to Station, Low, “Heroes,” Lodger, Scary Monsters, partly because of the prog gods who play on some of them (like Robert Fripp and Brian Eno). After that there was an endless wait for the next one, which was … Let’s Dance, a big letdown at the time (sounds okay now though, I admit).

I mentioned this already, but you should definitely check out Ultravox – Three Into One, a collection from the three John Foxx-era records (1977-8, before Midge Ure). I definitely hear some Bowie there, but Foxx is also different (and great). The guitar sound (on for example “Quiet Men”) is totally new wave. You would dig it.

Also, depending on why exactly it is that you like Bowie, you might (if you haven’t already), try Roxy Music (Country Life, Siren, Avalon), or even Brian Eno solo records (Here Come the Warm Jets, Taking Tiger Mountain, Another Green World, Before and After Science). The third of those was my favorite record ever for a while (for its prog aspects though; you might like the second one more). Phil Manzanera (of Roxy Music) is a guitar god and is all over the first two Eno records. Very proto-new wave: there’s a song on the fourth one called “King’s Lead Hat” – see if you can figure out why!

Man, I listened to James Brown for the first “real” time this week. I had no idea how much I was missing! More than a little ashamed, really. But at least I arrived at some point. I don’t think I’ll leave this funk trip ever.

I'd like to recommend my latest favorite artist! He goes by the name Flamingosis. He's a mixture of Hip Hop, Funk, Disco, Bossa Nova and Jazz.

Here's a little teaser he cut together on YouTube of his most recent album (which I'd argue is his best work yet) - https://youtu.be/udFTo6_Xkok

Mew! Thank you so much for posting those links. I added them all (except for your newest links-probably after this) to a funk playlist on Spotify. You’ve really given me a good boost to my funk “exploration“.  You could almost say you dropped a bomb on me.

Re: What music have you been enjoying lately?

Lately, I've been jamming (YouTube videos of) this old cassette tape of American supermarket muzak from the 1970's.

According to the description, "the music contains inaudible subliminal recordings that were intended to increase buyer purchasing at grocery stores.  Customers were influenced to purchase more products as a result of the brain-wave patterns hidden in the musical notes and sound compositions." I haven't noticed any difference in my spending habits, so I can't say for certain roll . I just love the overall vibe of it all. It has that unique 70's sound that I just can't get enough of.
