"Then you're being spoon-fed a limited range of pornography based on the keywords you use, based on your geographic location, based on their algorithms and the information that they're processing about time of day. They're doing a lot of data collection. Online-porn users don't necessarily realize that their porn-use patterns are largely moulded by a corporation."

This is really pretty sad, and also pretty scary. I slip right past 98% of the porn available on the few sites I visit. Maybe it's just that I'm way too "old fashioned", whatever that implies - but most of the porn seems to be far too violent, way *past* the point of being unnatural. It doesn't seem to make sense when the female is obviously not being satisfied. It also makes little or no sense when the female is obviously just acting. That's insulting to both sexes.
As for pron being a business - well, what would we expect?

When talking about an adult human female, please use the word "woman" instead of "female".

Okay - I'll gladly do that. I understand that women often feel threatened and demeaned by things I which would not occur to me. I need more education!

can I just say, I love this little mini bit of thread <3 Laney thanks for speaking up, harcos, thanks for being adaptable. I've never been comfortable with the term female to refer to human women people, and it was hard for me to quite pinpoint why... the article you linked, Laney, is a really great help.
And Harcos again, your call for more education is like, so nice to read. I feel like most of the time when I say I don't like something gender-linked, I'm already tensed for the backlash - being made to feel over-reacty, unfun, oversensitive, pressured to defend my position, etc. I's like this huge relief when someone responds, 'oh, I didn't know how that was for you! I'll change it, and I look forward to learning more and being even more awesome.' yeah it is literally the dream response and gives me hope and encourages me to speak up more often.
A+++++ thread would read again.

I felt the same way about your reply Harcos. Thanks for being understanding xx
Omg, yes, Viva, so much... I used to call people out on this forum much more when I was first made hostess, but I would usually be met with a kind of "sorry not sorry" response - defensiveness, stubbornness and an unwillingness to acknowledge the issue. Sometimes it would devolve into pointless and illogical arguments, which are emotionally draining and just take time away from the other work I have to do. So, it became easier to hold my tongue, and let the casual sexism hang above me like a dark cloud, accept that I'm headed to a future of being referred to as a 'girl' at age 45, having my identity reduced to my biological sex, perpetually 'othered'.
But then, I was just given mod privilidges... so now I feel a little more confident to bring attention to these seemingly small things, and engage in discussion about them, knowing that I could use my mod powers if necessary.
Also thank you so much for all of the positivity you've been bringing to the forum lately Viva .

Thank you, thank you for that, I'm really glad I happened upon this bit of info, as I usually only use the term when describing humans within an objective, noncommittal context, like behaviors, cultural traits and the like, but as far as in first and second person, I'll be more mindful in the future as well...
OT, I usually stick to Solo, Cam and masturbation key words as most other crap is too cheap and chaotic, so much so that I spend hours just editing and repairing the horrible hatchet-job that many pornographers consider their best work...

One thing that article reminds me of ("And so porn gets keyworded in very stereotyped, often sexist, often racist ways, and also just with a narrow-minded view of sexuality.") is Stoya's project to create a tagging system for the site she runs, and how she has had to think hard and talk to people who are really really in to specific things to decide what tags are needed and what should be the boundaries between them. And I hope that most people appreciate that most artists and performers in any medium don't make a lot of money, so if you want to see more of it pay when you can!

There is a related piece by Felix Salmon on Fusion (with links to another on slate) giving context on the company which owns the porn tube sites and a large part of the California porn industry. The whole idea of watching porn videos on some site full of ads while a giant corporation mines my data turns me off, but people do a lot of things that I don't get!

Could you post a link to Stoya's project please? I'm very interested. We're looking to create a tagging system for IFM as well, maybe we could pick up a few things...

I didn't save the links, but I think I remember reading:

I don't have the time or money to look into trenchcoatx but the idea sounds awesome! Stoya is a smart woman.

The 5th episode of Rain de Gray's podcast has some things about the state of the video porn industry in California https://tunein.com/podcasts/Culture/Dir … -p1123718/
I really don't understand how tube sites are a thing, but there are a lot of things in this world that I don't understand.

ooh I will check this out Priv, thanks. I love podcasts when I go on long walks.
I also don't get tube sites. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but how can so many people take so much pride in their clothes or their nutrition or cars or their electronics and spend heaps on getting them right - but watch the lowest common denominator porn tube sites, basically the equivalent of junk food... well, I guess a lot of people eat a lot of junk food too...
it makes me sad, and the reality is, I don't give my sexual being as much love and time and attention and it deserves, either. honestly, I think a big part of what I'm meant to do while single, is develop my sex life with myself to the level I want to bring to a relatioship, if I hope to meet an amazing lover and cultivate a partnership with great sex. I reckon our the quality of our partnered sex lives are so dependent on how we treat our solo sex life!

After hesitating for a while I subscribed yesterday evening. My thought was I subscribed to Netflix, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Prime and so on because I believe that quality, taste, ethics, creation, diversity comes at a price and as a somehow privileged person I can afford it. Though I watch the lowest kind of porn, where there's no ethics, no grace, where exploitation and brutality rules and I'm not even statisfied ... Actually most of the time I feel guilty. So here I am and I'm happy to meet you all.

oh my gosh callisthenes it certainly wasnt my intention to shame anyone or even mainstream porn, but i am SO glad you're here! welcome!!

Be sure that I didn’t feel shamed or offended by anything you said, that was just me sharing my personal thoughts on the topic and what ultimately led me here. Love your work by the way.

Welcome Callisthenes. I'm sure you'll find things very, very different to the mainstream here. Sometimes I think IFM is like a little oasis in desert of aggressive sexual disconnect.
