So, every once in a while when I get the urge to masturbate, instead of actually going and relieving myself, I instead go and research the topic of masturbation. (yeah, I know this sounds weird, but oddly the mental stimulation from the self education decreases the desire that exists just below the belt line) So this time around I decided to research female masturbation in particular, I found numerous articles online everywhere from reddit to cosmo to sex health websites. One thing that seemed to remain the same in the comment section was that the women who chose to respond with their own self pleasure habits was while many women admitted to masturbating more than once a day, they would also go a month or two without any self pleasure depending on various factors (in a relationship, work schedule, roommates)

Now personally I am a male and I have been masturbating since I was 12, and pretty much do it at least once every 48 hours ( I have found that relationship status really doesn't change my frequency) The longest I have ever gone without was when I was backpacking around Europe with my buddy for a month. (I should probably also mention that whilst on this trip I was still a virgin) Since we were always staying in hostels there wasn't any actual privacy so I pretty much left myself alone for a month. But by the time I got home I was about to go crazy thanks to lack of release (it is kind of weird to just be on a train pass by some random piece of brick and start to have the most insane sexually deviant thoughts imaginable).

So I guess my question is, what is common for the members of this site? Does relationship status alter your habits? Does it alter the habits of your partner?

Okay, good subject and yes, the focus of a lot of studies and I've done my share of research as well.
Male who started at age 13. There have been breaks as long as 90 days due to the nature of military service. Frequency has increased in the last 10 years to an average of once every other day with sporadic longer breaks when the urge will just die down for no apparent reason, those seldom last more than two weeks. Illness may factor in now and again. Flu and such. Nothing major. I'm on a medication and have been for several years that has a side effect of decreasing sexual energy/urge but it's not effected me at all though some anti-depressants most definitely take the lead out of your pencil. The one I take now doesn't have that side effect.
It's never caused problems in my relationships and in fact, by urging my partners to masturbate, it's actually a boost for both parties. Takes a lot of pressure off both, prolongs and intensifies sexual encounters and allows more freedom. It's been a positive in my relationships. Age? Well, don't look for a dramatic drop off any time soon. That is unless I'm an exception. It may take longer to achieve an orgasm but that's actually a plus as they are much more intense. While viewing pornographic content is a kick start, it's my imagination (Ms. Amari stated this in her diary.) that does the bulk of the work. Porn can become quite boring once the novelty wears off. I consider the content on IFM to be something much more than porn or even erotic art. Oh wow, this is a great topic! I have so much to say (I know, I know, I always have so much to say) but I'll have to make this a quick one as I'm the busiest of bees atm. The facts:

I can relate to you on that point! I find that doing friends shoots for IFM tends to supercharge my sexual energy for the next few days. FiveThirtyEight compiled data about masturbation frequency from the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behaviour 2009 by Indiana University. The percentage of people who said they haven't masturbated in the past year was quite large (18.5% of 18 to 24-year old males? Really?), which makes me think there was probably some under-reporting here. Does it seem like that to you? I wish we could conduct a study of the same size through IFM and compare the results.

I would have to agree with Aven here. I think there is a strong case of under reporting going on. It could be that they polled the local population, and Indiana being Midwestern and a part of the bible belt could very well be a factor. I would like to know the geography involved in the sample size. Additionally, how many people genuinely believe that 1 in 5 men age 18-24 haven't masturbated in a year? Now, I know because of our messed up society there are genuinely women in that age bracket who don't know enough about their body to even try masturbation, (If I recall some people have posted on this very site stating that this is what happened to them) so I am somewhat more accepting of that number, though I still think it is probably lower than 36%.

It's strange that they don't have that information available on their website, it's an important factor to consider in interpreting the results. It must only be available in the full papers. I think there was significant under reporting too, I almost didn't post it here since it makes what I think of as normal masturbation life look really unusual.
