I don't mind debating of politics, but the endless Character assassination. Followed about the "joke" of Bush's assassination. Just didn't set very well with me...
I had a feeling that was maybe the tipping point. That "joke" was a stand-in for expressing how I really feel about Bush, which would not be permissible to write in an open forum. In addition to my earlier resolution to avoid political posts (yes, some could argue that a joke based on the desirability of assassination goes beyond politics) I will now offer an apology to msn and to anyone else who may have been offended.

Ok, My brother-in-law is in Baghdad right Now. Every night I fear a phone call, And having to tell my wife the "news".
I know exactly how you feel: My BiL did two tours in Iraq as a major in the Army infantry (maybe he was a captain then; I get my chronology screwed up), including action in the early days, before "mission accomplished." He was a command-staff guy (a company XO?) in the 101st Airborne at the time they had a fragging incident -- some soldier rolled a grenade into a command tent -- and we had some very serious concerns for a few hours before we heard from him. He's a Lt Col now, and has a "safe" billet as a military science instructor in Washington state... but he could end up back in the sand at any time.
How do you vote the clowns out of office. If all that runs for office is clowns?
Happily, the candidates I'm volunteering for are not clowns... and I say that not just because they're Democrats or because they oppose the administration's policies. I got involved because I wanted to change things in Washington, but as I've gotten to know these candidates, I've become deeply proud to be trying to send them to Congress. They're genuinely good human beings who will be good stewards of the nation and the world it lives in.
Gotta get my sleep; canvassing tomorrow...

Daulphinb what are you doing !?!? If Bush is gone think of the loss to comedy! God imagine if Bill Hicks had the kind of Bush material (the other one was not quite as moronic) as comedians do today!
Ufortunatly though neither the dead nor the environment can appretiate satire so on the other hand yay go Daulphinb, everyone should do their bit to rid the world of that particular stoopid and dangerous man and that particular evil administration!
Sorry if I've offended anyone but the Bush administration offended me first!!

I wish I had your confidence. I'm cautiously optimistic about us winning the House -- and I'm working to make that optimism real, by donating time and treasure to the Dem House challengers here in CT -- but I'll believe the Senate when I see it. In CT, we probably can't affect the ultimate balance in the Senate, as our race is between the nominally-Democratic-but-hawkish incumbent Joe Lieberman, who's running as an independent after losing the primary, and the much more progressive Ned Lamont, who actually won the primary and is the endorsed Democratic Party candidate. The Republican is a distant third. I'm working hard for Lamont, who currently trails by ~8 points... but there are factors working in his favor that make it plausible he could close the gap. In any case, though, CT's senator will likely caucus with the Dems, so our seat will be D either way. Still, we're trying to do our part over in the House.

I know how you feel. I was too naive/trusting to recognize the danger as early as 1999...
Upon re-reading this thread, I realize I missed the unnecessary deference of this comment by my comrade dauphinb2, and I have to clarify (call me fickle, it's okay) as follows:
Any naïveté is mine, not dauphinb2's. My hatred of the bushman was(is) not as much based on the swine's policy and doctrine as it was (and still is) based on my understanding of his character. From his rising to tiptoes (and staying on them, bouncing) every time he coerced applause from the republican national convention in 1999 to his every speech since, where his whining, adversarial tone makes my entrails boil with madness -- there's where I come from.
Okay, sure, in terms of doctrine I can hold my own against any bible-thumping social conservative out there (I am fiscally conservative, or, at least, left enough to be moderate -- but can only muster nausea at even the thought that the issues social conservatives serve up upon the leather-bound platters of their King James Versions even exist as issues), but I have to be honest and simply say I hate his guts. That is not necessarily rational, but, what the hell (I'm sure he'd hate mine as well, given half a chance).
Thanks be to Pater Jove for the Constitution of the USA and its much vaunted "checks-and-balances," else the fool who sits in the oval office would have already become a dictator to rival the best of 'em. Go ahead, call me fickle, as I leave you with a rich cache of elevated sentiments.

No worries, Maxie, darlin': Even if we Democrats succeed in winning control of the Congress, that won't get rid of the president until the end of his term.[1] That is, of course, in contrast to the parliamentary systems in place in Australia, the UK, and numerous other democracies. Our president is the titular head of his party because he's president; not the other way 'round.
At times during this administration, I've harbored a somewhat wistful wish that we did have a parliamentary form of government... but on balance, I still have faith in our constitutional structure. I only hope we can right the ship of state before it founders completely.
_______
[1] Some of the more vehement Bush critics are saying he should be impeached once the Dems control Congress, but IMHO that's neither politically feasible nor a wise investment of political capital: Repairing the damage done is a far more urgent need than punishing those who did it. Now, I do think it's likely that some nation(s) will seek to charge the president with war crimes after he leaves office, but those charges would be largely symbolic: The U.S. has not signed on to the International Criminal Court, and as a matter of principle (and avoiding a horrible precedent) we would almost certainly never extradite a former president to stand trial for acts committed in the performance of his office... no matter how deeply most of us may regret those acts.

Ding, dong the witch is dead. Yes, he's around for two more years. No, he has no power whatsoever remaining.
Step one in Americans gaining a measure of respect from the rest of the world, but it's going to be a deservedly long and slow process, methinks. Trust me, we're regretful of the past 6 years.

A good day for lovers of peace, freedom, and the American way, IMHO.
Still one recount (in Virginia) to wait out to see if the Dems take the Senate as well as the House, and my own candidate won by only 167 votes (out of ~200,000), so there will be an automatic recount on that race as well.
I'll check back in a few days, hopefully with the good news.

"Whatever" too both political parties. (Though I wonder if Gala was focused only on California politics in general?)
Lets Withdraw from Iraq, and Invade Sudan. Lets stop the mass killing of Sudanese and ignore the mass killing of Iraqies. Clinton Bombed Sudan to stop WMD's. Bush invaded Iraq to stop WMD's. Is there a difference, No.
And that is why only about 35% of America voted. The same tactics by both parties. Only with a different name.
Every vote counts? No, When there is no third party that you can vote for. (I walked to the voting booth, and I saw only R or D. Then I turned around, and walked out. My wife voted straight D.)
Heck, I'd vote for the Transgender afro party. Heck, I'd vote for anybody. Just to replace the two party system.
That is what I call free speech. The Ability to vote for anybody, Not just a pseudo two party system.

Applause for Gala.
My state's politics has the strictest voting requirements. (Photo ID required.) And will allow a parties affiliation on the Ballot. Only, If they can get 20% of the districts population on a sign on ballot.
And if they do manage to get the required 20%. The district gets redrawn after the elections. (And the process has to start all over agian.)
So a prostitute would have a snowball chance in hell to get elected.
btw- I am one of 4 registered libertarians in my district. I have been allowed to vote only once for my parties affiliation.
