This just in: actress Scarlett Johansson is recording an album called "Scarlett Johansson sings Tom Waits". I am not joking.

Re: Currently listening to thread

When I was 16 I fell in love with Milla Jovovich. So much so that I can pin point the exact frame I fell in love with her when she was in The Fifth Element. Some years, and a bit of research later I found out that when she was 16 she releaced a CD titled The Divine Comedy. By the time I found out about this CD it was well and truely out of print, but some how, through much persistance (to the point of being a plague on just about every retail music shop in my small town), I was successful.
Some time later I found that she did two music videos for her song The Gentleman Who Fell .

Here is one version, I like this one. The sound is a bit crap, but it's okay otherwise:

Here was a black and white sort of film noir version of the same song. I like the first one, but thats just me:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSCFAxxC … ed&search=

Just for the hell of it. Here is Beavis and Butthead giving their review of Milla's black and white music video:

Their debut album and their finest. The track "because I was that little boy" always brings a lump to my throat, and is a classic.

Just picked up Strapping Young Lad's "The New Black". Enjoying that quite a bit. Then, it's back to Sikth's "Death of a Dead Day"...or maybe Texture's "Drawing Circles"

The Miami Vice 2006 film soundtrack.  Michael Mann, although he is of course not himself the composer, always has a crystal-clear vision of how he wants the music in his films to feel.

Re: Currently listening to thread

I'm currently discovering Placebo, and wondering where the hell I was while they were making music between 1996 and now.

This happens to me quite a bit.  I spend so much time paying attention to movies, I tend to lose track of what is going on in music.

If you are not familiar with Tom Waits (he of "Short Cuts" and J. Jarmusch movies, now would be a good time, in honor of Bob Altman and all...

Re: Currently listening to thread

I've never understood the attraction to Jeff Buckley. I've heard some of his stuff, but never got into it.
My best guess is that people like him simply because he's dead.
Ok, he was still pretty young when he died, but bloody hell, how many other musicians died and got not near as much recognition for their work.

Perhaps it a kind of Jim Morrison thing, I dunno. Can someone please explain it to me?

Re: Currently listening to thread

Unlike many of my colleagues in the experimental music scene, I need regular doses of the "classics" in order to feel whole (where "classic" might be Miles Davis Kind of Blue, Coltrane Giant Steps, Cream/Clapton, Mozart...) .  In fact, a lot of folks who make music claim they never listen to music, not even their own.  I spend many hours per week listening, and I mean full-focus listening, as opposed to some kind of multi-tasking.  If I need reinforcement I might listen to my own stuff.

Today on the trip home from my radio show, I tuned the car radio to a local classical station that was just starting a broadcast of a concert by the Cleveland Orchestra. Mahler Symphony No. 3 -- a monumental work.  I pulled in to a convenience store parking lot, shut the engine off, and sat there.  Nice subwoofer test.  I cranked it; big time.  Live concert performances are usually ten times more gutsy than the clinically perfect renditions heard in commercial recordings, so this was a chance to hear the piece played in a once-in-a-lifetime manner).  So I sat there for 70 minutes and escaped into another world.

Re: Currently listening to thread

Gotta love the man, Bishop.  Hard to believe this is the guy who wrote "Old '55", the Eagles hit.  He's way more interesting.

Appreciate classical music but don't love it.  I think we're too hung up on the idea that there is only one proper way to play it.  You just know that Mozart fucked around with stuff when he performed if any of the enfant terrible' stuff is true.

Tonight it's Bowie and Eno- 1. Outside.  Been going back thru the collection and trying to listen to those things I don't remember.  Tomorrow looks like Billy Bragg.

I've found this vid this morning on youTube.  I had never heard the song before.  I keep playing it over and over again.  I think it is wonderful.

Mandelbrot Set, by Jonathan Coulton.

WARNING!!! This song is a serious ear-worm. It crawled into my head several weeks ago, and now I hear it all the damn time.

Here's a link to it on YouTube:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=lIlwFpz9s_I

and here's one to his website:

You might also check out Mr. Fancy Pants, I Feel Fantastic, and Ikea.

But remember: I warned you about Mandelbrot Set. Don't blame me if all you can think about is a point called Z, in a complex plane!

Re: Currently listening to thread

I came across this today on YouTube. It is unfortunatley split in two halves (and sadly not very well either) but I do like Mullova's playing of this.

Eve knows from louche.  Good choices.  For your consideration- Junior Brown.  Amazing guitar player (plays a 6-string/lapsteel hybrid), great sense of humor, long pedigree, respect for his elders.... excuse me whilst I cue up the next one.
